The heart of an entrepreneur beats a little faster
and more passionately than that of an average person. Something
different drives each entrepreneur but there is a common thread:
the ability to take risks and create reality from little more than
a dream. Concrete Works of Colorado, Inc. is an excellent example
of this type of entrepreneurial spirit.
For President Marc Lenart, the company has been a labor of love
from the moment he and a friend decided to go into business for
themselves. "We don't want to be the biggest," he explains,
"We want to be the best."
This goal has driven Concrete Works of Colorado to the success
it currently enjoys. Founded in 1978, the company was a joint venture
between Lenart and a friend when both were in their early 20s. Working
tirelessly and making little money in their jobs as cement finishers,
the two men managed to scrape together $3000–enough to make
their dream a reality. Lenart and his partner quit their jobs to
start a business that would eventually become an award-winning multimillion-dollar
company with more than 120 employees.
Supplies for a concrete construction company are not exotic but
they did require a large portion of the company's start-up capital.
Working from a base in Brighton, Colorado, the partners purchased
basic equipment such as concrete forms and tools. In order to stay
in business, however, Concrete Works needed clients. The early days
were a struggle but the partners soon found their first job: a local
Arby's fast food restaurant was constructing a new building and
needed foundation work. By developing a careful estimate, Concrete
Works delivered the lowest bid and was awarded its first contract.
Concrete Works of Colorado was on its way to success.
After that humble beginning, Concrete Works of Colorado shifted
its focus to heavy highway concrete construction work. In 1978,
the company had just a handful of jobs and the founding partners
did most of the work. Slowly, however, things began to pick up.
In 1980, Lenart bought out his partner and began firmly steering
the company, guided by his philosophy that quality is more important
than quantity.
The company eventually began working 15 to 20 jobs annually. Hiring
laborers, operators, finishers and carpenters became almost second
nature to Lenart and as the company grew, a central office was established.
Today, while his employees keep the office running smoothly, Lenart
is able to do what he loves best–staying outside on the job
site.
Despite the firm's business successes through the early years,
Lenart believes the first major milestone for the company was reached
in 1992 when it bid on an underpass job in Boulder, Colorado. Although
this would normally have been a year-long job, bidders were given
just three months to complete the work. In addition, $10,000-per-day
penalties were in place if the job ran over the time limit. Just
two companies were brave enough to bid on the job, and Concrete
Works of Colorado won the contract.
A $1.6 million job, this project represented a chance for Concrete
Works to show its business philosophy could work on large jobs as
well as small. True to form, the company completed the work early,
earning a bonus and an award from the American Concrete Paving Association.
The next major milestone came in 1998 with a highway concrete job
at Santa Fe and Belleview in Denver, which took about a year to
complete. However, the Colorado Department of Transportation initially
balked at granting the company the contract because it believed
Concrete Works could not handle a $10.5 million project. Despite
intense competition, Concrete Works managers earned the confidence
of state officials and won the contract. The state's trust was well
placed. Concrete Works of Colorado completed the project early and
even won first place in the National Paving Awards.
Lenart's heartfelt belief in his employees is at the core of his
company's success. Whether it's pipeline work, a bridge, an underpass,
or a roadway, it’s obvious that Lenart is appreciative of
the dedication and commitment his employees bring to each job. "My
employees are the biggest asset this company has," he says.
A tireless leader, Lenart is relentless in his pursuit of quality.
Carrying both a mobile phone and a walkie-talkie, he stays connected
to each work crew in order to answer questions they may have or
just keep on top of how the job is progressing. This attention to
detail has created a reputation for Concrete Works of Colorado as
a company that consistently comes in under budget and on time.
A firm commitment to slow growth and attention to quality continues
to drive all of Concrete Works' business decisions. From its earliest
days as a dream by young men who just wanted to run their own business
to the reality of being one of the most respected concrete construction
companies in Colorado, the success of Concrete Works of Colorado
is the kind only dreamed of by many entrepreneurs. That success
will continue earning the company respect and admiration from both
competitors and clients alike. |
