Boulder CO – Broadway Street (Euclid to 18th) Transportation Improvements Project

This City of Boulder, CO project significantly improved the safety and mobility of a highly traveled and congested area in Boulder. A busy and dynamic stretch of road with 30,000 cars, 1280 buses, and several thousand pedestrians and cyclists utilizing the highway every day.

Major work items included roadway concrete and HMA pavement removal and construction, caissons, reinforced concrete structures work, stone and brick facing, water main construction, storm sewer construction, traffic signal removal and construction, steel railing, under-drains, driveways, curb ramp, roadway signage and pavement markings, lighting and electrical construction, and landscaping and irrigation construction.

Two structures were built, one an underpass beneath Broadway with intricate form liners and stone work and one a steel bridge with a cast in place deck.

To minimize the duration of construction and traffic congestion, the project team determined a unique single phase detour for Broadway Street. This phasing allowed efficient and timely construction of the underpass with little impact to traffic.

The project had unprecedented funding with multiple owners including: Federal, City of Boulder, University of Colorado, Boulder County, RTD, and CDOT.

The development simultaneously enhanced the beauty of this gateway while creating a safer and more efficient corridor for multi-modal users.

Won APWA award for Engineering / Construction Management – Medium Community.
