This project, which began on May 7th of 2007, included a major
resurfacing of the eastbound lanes on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon from
the No Name overpass to the Grizzly Creek rest area. The full depth
reconstruction of the pavement section included removal of deteriorating
asphalt pavement, removal and regrading of base course material,
placement of new 11-inch concrete pavement, and concrete resurfacing
of a bridge deck. Approximately 9,500 cubic yards of concrete was
used. The work required eastbound traffic to be detoured onto one
lane of the westbound lanes from the No Name tunnels to the Hanging
Lake tunnel, resulting in two-way traffic 24 hours a day. Several
on and off ramps were affected for the duration of the project.
.
The paving project was completed 22 days ahead ahead of schedule
earning Concrete Works an early completion incentive. “CDOT
and Concrete Works’ goal was to have the project completed
by the weekend before July 4,” CDOT Resident Engineer Pete
Mertes said. “We met this goal with strong teamwork, partnering
and an aggressive schedule set by Concrete Works.”
This project was the first in a series of phased projects which
will replace the current asphalt pavement in Glenwood Canyon with
a durable concrete pavement, providing better performance in the
seasonal harsh conditions in the area.
