The intersection at University Blvd. and E. Asbury Ave. went from potholed asphalt to smooth concrete this past July. Over 24,000 square feet of deteriorating asphalt roadway and curb and gutter were removed and replaced with over 1,440 cubic yards of concrete placed as a 12-inch thick slab across five traffic lanes. All this work was completed while working over 60-inch and 30-inch pressurized water mains.

Once awarded the project, Concrete Works responded immediately, started the project a week later than was allowed, and completed the project 4 days earlier than the required completion date. In addition, approximately 1/3 more work as specified by the city after the start of construction, was also completed within that time frame.
To minimize traffic disruptions, continuous flow was allowed for both north and southbound lanes on University through the intersection. Access to all businesses was maintained. All necessary steps were taken to ensure that motorists would not be impacted significantly. Traffic control officers worked the intersections at Evans and Buchtel during the entire length of the project and message boards announcing the work schedule were set up in six different locations. Traffic was also monitored remotely at the Traffic Control Center and timing was adjusted at adjacent intersections to further optimize traffic flow.
The two main paving days were scheduled on weekend days to minimize impact to the traveling public. Crews and equipment were mobilized from the Gillette project to meet the city’s schedule, a demonstration of Concrete Works’ commitment to completing the project within the accelerated schedule.
Metro Mix supplied the concrete for the project. |
