November, 2011: 14th Street Ribbon Cutting

CWC's 14th Street team joined city officials for the unveiling of the newly reconstructed 14th Street on November 17th.  Mayor Hancock was among those making remarks. The project took approximately one year to complete.

November, 2011: Work on Broadway Underpass Begins

CWC's work on the construction of a pedestrian/bicycle underpass beneath Broadway at 16th Street and Euclid Avenue in Boulder, began the week of November 14th and is expected to take approximately 9 months. The project will include:

• Expansion of the northbound and southbound transit stops with additional transit amenities.
• Changing the Broadway/Euclid Avenue/16th Street four-way intersection into two “T” intersections.
• Installation of a pedestrian traffic signal at Broadway and 17th Street.
• Installation of a traffic signal at Broadway and 18th Street.
• Multi-use path improvements along Broadway.

September, 2011: CWC Honored with Two ACPA National Gold Awards

Concrete Works of Colorado has been awarded two national awards from the American Concrete Paving Association. The South Broadway Reconstruction Project in Denver, Arizona to Iowa, won a Gold Award in the Municipal Streets & Intersections <30,000 SY category.  Our work on the general aviation apron at the Grand Junction Regional Airport also won a Gold Award in the Reliever & General Aviation Airports category.  Concrete Works will be recognized at the 48th Annual ACPA Meeting Awards Banquet on Friday, December 2nd, in Indian Wells, California.  The ACPA Annual Awards for Excellence in Concrete Pavement are designed to honor quality concrete pavements constructed in the United States and Canada each year. The awards program encourages high-quality workmanship in every concrete pavement project and serves as a forum for sharing information about highly successful projects.

February, 2011: Two CWC Projects Win Local ACPA Awards

The South Broadway Reconstruction Project/Iowa to Arizona in Denver, completed last summer, has been awarded the Award for Excellence in Concrete Paving by the Colorado/Wyoming Chapter of the ACPA in the Municipal Streets and Intersections <30,000 SY category.  The Grand Junction Regional Airport/Concrete General Aviation Apron won the Award for Excellence in Concrete Paving in the Reliever and General Aviation Airports category.

December, 2010: CWC Wins National ACPA Gold Award

Concrete Works of Colorado was presented with the Gold ACPA National Award for Excellence in Concrete Paving at the ACPA's 47th annual conference in Bonita Springs, Florida, on December 3, 2010.  Dick Brasher was on hand to accept the award for the Plum Creek Parkway in Castle Rock, Municipal Streets & Intersections (<30,000 SY).

November, 2010: Wewatta Construction Completed

Reconstruction work on Wewatta St. in Denver, from the bridge over Cherry Creek through the 15th St. intersection, was completed in November. Work on the job included placing new curb and gutter, concrete pavement, curb ramps, signal work, landscaping and irrigation work, site furnishings, pavement marking and permanent signing, and some stairs and hand rails.  Sidewalk work included colored and sandblast textured finishes. Joe Schwartz was the project superintendent on the project.

November, 2010: 14th Street Project Officially Underway
City officials gathered on Tuesday, Nov. 23rd to break ground for the 14th Street Sidewalk/Streetscape project, Denver's largest streetscape improvement project since the construction of the 16th Street Mall. The project is expected to take approximately 13 months. Concrete Works is currently preparing for the first paving, to take place the second week in December.

September, 2010: Work Begins at Walker Field/Grand Junction

The reconstruction of the west air carrier ramp is underway at Walker Field in Grand Junction. The project will include 15,000 sy of lean concrete base course (6" thick), 16,000 sy of 16" thick concrete pavement, 10,000 cy of excavation and over excavation, and 500 lf of trench drain. Weather permitting, the project is estimated to be completed by year end.

September, 2010: Work begins at NCAR

Construction began in August on the parking lots at the National Center for Atmospheric Research's Mesa Lab in Boulder. Repaving the entire 1.1 mile entrance road, and the construction of an uphill bike lane and new pedestrian walkway along the road, are also part of the $1.6 million project. Construction is expected to continue through mid-October.

August, 2010: S. Broadway Grand Reopening Celebration

Concrete Works celebrated the completion of the S. Broadway Reconstruction project on August 19th with a non-conventional ribbon cutting. Mayor John Hickenlooper, Public Works Manager Bill Vidal and Denver City Council President Chris Nevitt made remarks at the ceremony and then took the "first drive" through a banner onto the new concrete roadway. Concrete Works' Dick Brasher presented the officials with mementos of the project: actual pieces of trolley track taken from S. Broadway during the reconstruction.

April, 2010: Work Begins on the 95th Street Bridge Replacement

The 95th Street Bridge Replacement project will remove the roadway bridge over Left Hand Creek south of SH119, and replace it with a wider structure that will include shoulders for bicycles and a multi-use pedestrian path.  The new structure will be constructed to accommodate the Boulder County's Longmont-to-Boulder regional trail underneath the structure resulting in a continuous connection via an underpass between the Longmont-to-Boulder (LoBo) Regional Trail and the existing Longmont Trail System. The new bridge is expected to be open to traffic on June 12, 2010.

March, 2010: Plum Creek Parkway Project Honored by ACPA & ACI

The Plum Creek Parkway project in Castle Rock was selected as a winner of the ACPA, Colorado/Wyoming Chapter's 2010 Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award in the category of Municipal Streets & Intersections (<30,000 SY).

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Concrete Institute awarded the Plum Creek project a second place Award of Excellence, and the project also won the ACI Overall Judge's Award

CWC to Begin Work on 30th Street Improvements in Boulder in March, 2010

This project will install pedestrian, bicycle, transit stop and vehicular improvements along and adjacent to 30th Street in Boulder. The project will include bike lanes on 30th Street from Arapahoe Avenue to Pearl Street, new bridge and pedestrian/bicycle underpass on 30th Street at Boulder Left Hand and North Boulder Farmer's ditch (just south of Pearl Street), multi-use path connection between the east side of 30th Street and Goose Creek Greenway (the path connection on the west side already exists), mid-block pedestrian crossings on 30th Street between Canyon Boulevard and Walnut Street and between Pearl Street and Goose Creek Greenway, an additional left turn lane for northbound 30th Street at Pearl Street, a 10-foot wide sidewalk on the east side of 30th Street from Arapahoe Avenue to Walnut Street, and transit stop amenities and urban streetscape improvements.

December 2009 Plum Creek Parkway Grand Opening

December 18th, 2009 marked the grand opening of the Plum Creek Parkway in Castle Rock.  A number of local dignitaries were on hand to celebrate the new roadway. This new road segment connects the current end of Coachline Road southeast to the Plum Creek Parkway interchange with I-25. An 8-foot-wide, multi-use path will line the new, nearly 1-mile stretch. Final work on the path and landscaping will be completed in the summer.

December 2009 CWC Travels to Orlando to Accept National Award

What do you get when you combine harsh weather, a tight schedule, and some complex construction details with the busiest traffic corridor in the state of Wyoming?   The answer for those involved in this construction project was a well-orchestrated project completed ahead of schedule.

Concrete Works traveled to Florida to accept the national gold level award from the American Concrete Paving Association for the State Highway 59: Donkey Creek to Interstate 90 project in Gillette. The award, given in the category of Municipal Streets & Intersections (greater than 30,000 sq. yards), was presented at the 20th annual Excellence in Concrete Pavement Awards in Orlando on December 4th.

September 2009: Hwy 59/Gillette Project Wins National ACPA Award

The State Highway 59–Donkey Creek to I-90/Gillette project has been selected as the gold level winner of the ACPA National 20th Annual Excellence In Concrete Pavement Award. The project won in the category of Municipal Streets and Intersections >30,000 SY. Joe Schwartz was the project superintendent on the project. Formal awards will be presented at the ACPA's 46th annual meeting on December 4th in Orlando.

July 2009: Mayor Takes a Loader Ride at S. Broadway Groundbreaking

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper drove a CWC loader, with help from Brandon Turner, at the recent groundbreaking for the S. Broadway Reconstruction Project in Denver. The ceremony included remarks by the Mayor, Denver Public Works Manager Bill Vidal and Councilman Chris Nevitt.

May 2009: CWC Awarded Plum Creek Parkway Project in Castle Rock

Concrete Works has been awarded the Plum Creek Parkway project in Castle Rock. Plum Creek Parkway paving should begin in July and will include 20,000 sy of 8 inch concrete pavement.  The 1.7 million dollar project should be completed in October or November of 2009. Joe Schwartz will be the project superintendent.

April 2009:  CWC is Awarded S. Broadway Reconstruction Project

CWC has been awarded the South Broadway Reconstruction Project which is scheduled to begin in June, 2009. The project will include the reconstruction of Broadway–from Iowa Avenue to Arizona Avenue–in new concrete pavement, major drainage and utility upgrades, new signalization, construction of a new raised landscape median and streetscape improvements.  The project is anticipated to take one year.

August 19th 2008: Dedication of City Park’s Electric Prismatic Fountain

Tuesday, August 19th marked the dedication of City Park’s Electric Prismatic Fountain. Mayor John Hickenlooper, along with other city officials, unveiled the newly reconstructed fountain, which then thrilled spectators with an incredible light and water show much like those that made it a Denver landmark years ago. Several CWC crew members involved with the project were also on hand for the event that included music by the Denver Municipal Band.

Summer, 2008: Concrete Works' New Portable Batch Plant

The Walker Field apron reconstruction project in Grand Junction was the maiden voyage for Concrete Works' new portable batch plant, the CON-E-CO Low-Pro 427 CM.  Providing 12 cubic yards per load, and up to 300 cubic yards per hour, this mobile batch plant increases CWC's flexibility and responsiveness to more remote projects by allowing crews to make and provide concrete on the site of the project and not be at the mercy of local ready mix suppliers.   In addition, having a mobile batch plant will expand our concrete paving capabilities and allow us to more competitively pursue interstate highway concrete paving projects. 

The CON-E-CO Low-Pro 427 is a wet batch plant, rather than a dry plant, meaning the plant mixes the water into the aggregate and cement prior to dumping in the trucks.  A dry batch plant dumps the aggregate and the cement into the mixer trucks, water is added, and the concrete is mixed in the truck.

June 2007: Thank-You BBQ at City Park

A "thank-you" BBQ was held on Thursday, June 28th for the crews working on the Ferril Lake/City Park Improvement Project. Thank you again for your dedication and hard work! Thanks also to Stacy for her organization of the event, which included a fantastic spread from M & D's BBQ. The event followed the reopening of City Park, and the official start-up of the prismatic electric fountain, by the mayor and other city officials.

June 2007: Celebrating the Reopening of City Park

City Park was officially reopened on Thursday, June 28th in a ceremony to honor those who played a role in the City Park/Ferril Lake improvement project and to recognize those recent improvements. Mayor John Hickenlooper awarded certificates of merit to Concrete Works' own Marc Lenart, Tom Wood and Bill Plaehn from Parsons, Peter Young from Peak 'n Prairie and fountain historian Larry Kerecman. Then, with the Denver Municipal Band playing on the bandshell, the mayor gave the word to start the newly reconstructed fountain, sending a plume of water sky-high to the delight of all.

2007 CCA-CDOT Project Management Awards

At this year’s CCA-CDOT Region 4 Project Management Awards banquet, two Concrete Works of Colorado (CWC) supervisors were nominated. Scott (Jake) Jacobson was a nominee for his outstanding work on the Ft. Morgan Port-of-Entry project, #CC R400-156, and Joe Schwartz was nominated for his excellent work on the I-25 Panel Replacement from SH66 to SH14, project #MTCE 04-061 (M4061).

Award nominees were selected based on their ability to coordinate the activities of the construction project, skill in supervision of construction personnel, and effectiveness in serving as a liaison between the supervisor’s company and CDOT managers. The award was bestowed on the team of Todd Gonser, CDOT Engineer and Joe Schwartz, CWC Superintendent.

Joe Schwartz consistently exhibits strong leadership qualities and is able to associate easily with construction personnel as well as work together with them. In addition, Joe has a strong technical aptitude with the ability to tackle a task logically, and perseverance to see it through to completion.

Joe Schwartz is typical of the type of professional supervisor that Concrete Works of Colorado assigns to its projects. CWC supervisors are always prepared to work under pressure and are able to link up with a wide spectrum of people, from field personnel to engineers, to project owners in order to produce high quality construction projects – on time and within budget!
